WaLKS FOR RICHARD

2017 marked the 50th anniversary of artist Richard Long acclaimed photographic work A Line Made by Walking, documenting a physical yet ephemeral intervention with the landscape. In homage to this central figure of conceptual art and walking as performative practice, I staged a series of Walks for Richard during my residency with the Montello Foundation in the remote sage-brush desert of Northern Nevada.
Illustrating the unseen labor embedded within Long’s historic work, I walked repeatedly in the landscape to produce a set of East/West and North/South desire lines – the trace of which is implied through the repeated gesture, but never actually revealed to camera.
In 2019 she returned to theses site and confirmed that the visible trace of these actions had disappeared with time.
